Frivolous desire #215 -- My own pack mule



I suppose the beauty of dorming is being able to walk to class every day, but I carry so much stuff that it's a pain. Most of the time I don't even use all of my stuff, but...yknow...what if I need to (someday)? However, it's come to the point where I feel like I'm causing some sort of permanent damage to my shoulder.

My great fear is that I'll build up the muscle on that particular side until I look like this:

Here's some lineless practice, using binsybaby's technique. She posted a neat little video showing her work process, and I wanted to give it a shot. Still trying to get the hang of it, but it's neat to know how it's done:



CHYEAAAH, nowhere near her level, but works better than all the other lineless methods I've tried. The secret: Lasso tool! ooooh aaaah.

I've been too lazy to post lately...I've been more interested in getting classwork in on time and working on my own personal projects (admittedly with little success). This is probably a good thing, since I used to draw things purely for the sake of putting them up. Sad, I know ):

Doing both animation & illustration drives me nuts sometimes. My interest constantly wavers between them. Right now I'm feeling more illustration, but my film is eating my soul. buh

I feel like all of my sketches are way too ...line-y? Compared to my old drawings they seem completely different. I'm not sure I like the change. People talk about the natural evolution/progression of someone's style, but what if you prefer the old to the new? I almost feel like I'm backsliding....

oops, yet another non-art post...but I just can't contain my excitement :)

My sister and I headed out to the Montclair Public Library (i think?) today. She told me about their great 6 (old, unloved?) books for $1 deal, so we went to loot their bookshelves.

And loot we did.



48 books for $8, what a steal. We found several of our beloved childhood books. I was on the hunt for great illustrations, and managed to pick up a ton of lovely picture books. Wanted to share some of my favorites here (they're too good NOT to share):








Trina Schart Hyman. I fell in love with her work after seeing Saint George and the Dragon. ha I was overjoyed to find five of her books.








Mercer Mayer (from East of the Sun & West of the Moon)





Eric Beddows (from Shadow Play). Wonderful silhouettes.




Nancy Ekholm Burkert (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)




Barbara Berger (Grandfather Twilight) Very simple and whimsical...nice colors, too.




Heidi Holder (Aesop's Fables)




Susan Jeffers (top, for The Wild Swans) and John Steptoe (bottom, for the wonderful Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters)




Some Tomie DePaola (top) and Don Freeman (bottom, for Inspector Peckit)



this one was an interesting find. It's by Rolf Myller. The book, A Very Noisy Day, caught my eye because of the way typography was utilized.

Very happy to find his little autobiography. Not very heavy with insight, more like a collection of light anecdotes, complemented with his lively illustrations.
